I-UNIK International Mission School

Community of Hope · Careysburg · Montserrado County, Liberia

Moving From Good To Great

I-UNIK International Mission School has educated children in Careysburg since July 2013 — from daycare through senior high, on a five-acre campus with boarding and day programmes, a working computer laboratory, satellite internet and solar power.

The school prepares Liberian students for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination while building the practical technology fluency that the next generation of work will ask of them. Every subject is taught around a driving question and a culminating piece of work, and every student is assessed continuously rather than by examination alone.

Education philosophy

“What problems can I solve with what I learned?”

Assessment at I-UNIK is not a measure of memory but evidence of understanding, application, creativity, collaboration, character, and problem-solving. Students are trained to ask not “What did I learn?” but “What problems can I solve with what I learned?” I-UNIK Continuous Learning & Performance Assessment Policy

Children learn best when they engage actively with knowledge, apply it to real situations, reflect honestly on their own growth, and demonstrate what they know through work that matters. Every lesson at I-UNIK is planned and assessed against five questions, in this order of depth.

  1. KnowledgeWhat should students know?
  2. UnderstandingCan they explain it?
  3. ApplicationCan they use it?
  4. InnovationCan they improve it?
  5. ReflectionWhat did they learn about themselves?

Academic programme

A single path from daycare to senior high

Students progress through four bands, each with its own curriculum and assessment weighting, without ever having to change schools.

Daycare & Kindergarten

Early literacy, numeracy and structured play in small groups.

Grades 1–6

Core primary curriculum with creative arts and first computer-laboratory work.

Grades 7–9

Junior high across mathematics, the sciences, social studies and language arts, ending in the WAEC Grade 9 examination.

Grades 10–12

Senior high sciences, humanities and economics, preparing candidates for the WASSCE.

New: I-UNIK iCampus

A child's location should never decide whether they can receive an I-UNIK education. iCampus now admits students who learn from home — same curriculum, same CLPA assessment standard, same WAEC track as every on-campus student.

How we teach

Six periods, continuous assessment

The five-week period

The academic year is divided into six instructional periods of five weeks each. A period opens with a baseline lesson, moves through classroom and laboratory work, an applied assignment, a mastery quiz and a presentation, and closes with a performance task and a written reflection.

Continuous Learning & Performance Assessment

Each student earns 100 points per period across attendance and participation, classwork, assignments, mastery quizzes, computer-laboratory practicals, a project presentation, and a portfolio — so a single examination never decides a child's standing alone.

Technology as a subject and a tool

Networked laboratory terminals, satellite internet and research tools are built into ordinary lessons rather than reserved for a separate computer class, across every grade band.

A record that follows the student

Every enrolled student carries an I-PSIN identification number used for attendance, assessment records and reporting from registration through graduation.

Technology & artificial intelligence

An AI-ready school that is already running as one

I-UNIK's technology position is not a proposal awaiting funding. The connectivity, the power, the laboratory and the software are in place and in daily use, which is an uncommon starting point for a school in Liberia.

Connectivity and power that hold

Starlink satellite internet and solar power keep the laboratory, the network and the school's own systems running through national grid outages — so digital work is dependable enough to build a curriculum on, not an occasional treat.

AI carries academic weight

Fifteen of every hundred points, in every subject, every five-week period, come from an AI and computer-laboratory practical. Students are graded not on using the tool but on explaining what it changed and why — responsible, reasoned use, assessed like any other academic skill.

A laboratory used across the school

Networked terminals serve every grade band as part of ordinary lessons — research, simulations, timelines, spreadsheets, design and coding — rather than being reserved for a separate computing period.

Software built in-house

The school designed, built and operates its own integrated platform: enrolment and finance, gate attendance by student ID scanning, teacher gradebooks and lesson planning, and a student portal carrying each child's digital portfolio.

New: Global Media & Innovation Center

Mastering a lesson is only half of an education. The Media Center is where I-UNIK students make things — broadcasts, articles, podcasts, designs and code — and publish them to an audience beyond the classroom.

Grounds

Five acres owned outright by the school in Community of Hope, Careysburg, with room for the programme to keep growing.

Results

What our students achieve

100% WAEC pass rate

Achieved by our Grade 6, Grade 9 and Grade 12 candidates in the West African Examinations Council examinations.

The school's highest honour, the Golden Tiger Legacy Award, recognises the graduating student whose character and contribution best reflect what I-UNIK sets out to form.

School Aid Partnership

Full support for children who would otherwise be out of school

The I-UNIK School Aid Partnership exists for underprivileged, disabled and disadvantaged children — those for whom the barrier to education is circumstance rather than ability. Support under the partnership is not partial assistance toward a bill. A sponsored child receives the full educational package at I-UNIK.

25 children of blind parents

are currently enrolled and fully supported at I-UNIK — tuition, daily breakfast and lunch, transportation, uniforms and laboratory fees all carried by the school.

What the package covers

Tuition, breakfast and lunch every school day, daily transportation to and from campus, school and physical-education uniforms, and laboratory and technology fees — so that a supported child arrives fed, sits in the same classroom, follows the same curriculum and is assessed to the same standard as every other student at I-UNIK.

For international partners

I-UNIK stands ready to work with international bodies, foundations, mission organisations and NGOs seeking a credible local channel for educational support. Sponsorship is matched to named children, and partners receive reporting on attendance and academic progress drawn from the same continuous assessment record every student here carries.

$2.75 a day to keep a child in school

It may seem like nothing to some. But that amount, given daily, can build a future of hope for a child for whom education is a luxury.

Partnership

Open to government, NGO and institutional partners

What I-UNIK has built for itself is transferable, and the school is positioned to extend it beyond its own campus.

Teacher training

The CLPA framework and the AI-integrated lesson model are documented, in use across every grade, and teachable. I-UNIK welcomes training partnerships with ministries, county education offices and NGOs working to move schools from examination-driven grading toward continuous, evidence-based assessment.

A ready site for programmes and pilots

The campus already carries the internet, power, laboratory and boarding capacity that education-technology programmes usually have to build from nothing. That makes it a practical host for pilots, teacher institutes and regional training rather than a site needing years of preparation first.

School systems built to be owned

I-UNIK develops the school-management and learning software it runs on, and can build the same for other institutions — enrolment and fees, attendance, gradebooks, parent and student portals. Each system is delivered as that institution's own property, carrying its own identity and holding its own data, rather than rented software a school pays for indefinitely and never comes to own.

Talk to us

Ministries, NGOs, mission partners and fellow schools are welcome to write to the school office. We are glad to host a visit and show the work in operation rather than describe it on paper.

Admissions & enquiries

Admission is open all year round

Because learning here is assessed continuously across six five-week periods rather than by end-of-term examination alone, a child who arrives in the middle of the year has not arrived too late. New students join at the start of the next instructional period, begin with the same Week 1 baseline activities as everyone else, and carry a complete assessment record from that point forward.

Applications for day and boarding places are received at the school office throughout the year, and families of prospective students are welcome to arrange a campus visit.
